Hounds Sputter To Draw vs Detroit
Coming to the end of a tough stretch of six matches vs top contenders in the USL, the Riverhounds learned a lesson about switching off mentally this evening in their 1-1 draw with Detroit City FC in front of a nearly sold out Highmark Stadium.
The first 20 minutes saw both teams feeling each other out before the 'Hounds began to turn up the heat a bit. They had the run of the chances in the first half and the bulk of the possession(albeit mostly in their own defensive half of the pitch). They broke through after Luis Argudo picked out Albert Dikwa making a run off the back shoulder of a defender in the 18, with Dikwa slotting it home to the far post and giving the 'Hounds a 1-0 lead. Pittsburgh had a goal disallowed shortly after in controversial fashion, as a phantom call was levied against the 'Hounds that could have seen them up 2-0. Kenardo Forbes had a volley from 25 yards denied as well towards the end of the half.

In the second half, the 'Hounds continued to press but were unable to find a second goal. They came closest on 65' when Dikwa was denied from close range. The match turned on its head 5 minutes later when the 'Hounds switched off. With Pittsburgh caught up field, Detroit strung together a series of passes that ended with a diagonal ball played to New Zealand International Deklan Wynne, who had more than enough time to pick out his runner, selecting the trailing Maxi Rodriguez, who finished confidently to bring the match level.
The 'Hounds sought a winner but came up empty handed on the chances they generated late.
ReportIt Man Of The Match: Deklan Wynne, Detroit City FC. It's not often that we bestow MOTM honors on a visiting player, but Wynne largely neutralized Alex Dixon out wide for Pittsburgh and then delivered the slicing pass to tie the match. Many players can be effective at the USL level given a few touches, but a player with several years of MLS experience and 15 caps for New Zealand can be lethal with that opportunity. He made the most of it.
